Dogs learn by association. I use positive reinforcement when training my girls, it is proven to be the most effective way to train your pets.
Types of Rewards
For my German Shepherd Nyla, she loves toys. That is a way to train her positively by giving them to her.
Sierra response greatly with treats. It is best to reward your dog for good behavior immediately after so the command or action is associated with the reward.
Slowly decrease the amount of treats you give. We break their treats in half now, which does the trick.
Every time you give a reward, whether is being a treat or a toy, say a short phrase like “good girl!”
When saying commands, use short phrases. When potty training the girls we say “pee pees” it’s short and sweet!
Ignore The Bad
Do not encourage bad behaviors. Do not offer treats or toys when your dog is chewing on something they aren’t supposed to. (Yes I’m guilty) the bribe technique doesn’t work.
Every training session should be limited. Patience is one skill you need to have when training your pet. Mistakes will happen, shoes will be chewed! That’s all the fun of dog parenting right?
