Ah yes, the German Shepherd. One of my favorite breed of dogs!
GSD make up 1.8% of the world dog population! I first was interested in German Shepherds as a young girl. Seeing them as police dogs and being used in the military drove me to them. They have such a sweet temperament, although they are commonly shown being aggressive breeds.
They originated from Germany, in the 1800s. GSD were bred to herd sheep.
German Shepherds are apart of the Working Dog category of breeds; they are born with instinctive characteristics like high performance, tracking and sniffing abilities, intelligence, faithful, and loyal.
My Nyla is all of those things!
GSD are also very energetic. They need to be exercised and played with everyday.
They are also pretty big dogs. Female can range from 49lbs to 71lbs and makes from 66lbs to 88lbs. Nyla is around the 60lb margin. She is sort of petite for her breed.
GSD also have some high risk health issues. They are prone to developing hip dysplasia, knee pain, blindness, arthritis, and various heart conditions.
